Delayed puberty

Delayed puberty, also known as delayed sexual maturation, is a condition in which the onset of puberty is significantly later than the normal age range. Puberty is the process of physical and sexual maturation that leads to the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the ability to reproduce. In girls, delayed puberty is typically defined as the absence of breast development by the age of 13, while in boys, it is the absence of testicular enlargement by the age of 14. However, the timing of puberty can vary widely among individuals, and a slight delay does not necessarily indicate a medical problem.

  • Some common signs and symptoms of delayed puberty may include:

    • 1. Lack of breast development in girls by age 13.
    • 2. Lack of testicular enlargement or growth of facial and pubic hair in boys by age 14.
    • 3. Slower growth and shorter stature compared to peers.
    • 4. Delayed growth spurt and skeletal maturation.
  • Causes of delayed puberty:

    • 1. Constitutional delay: In some cases, delayed puberty is simply a variation of normal growth patterns and is referred to as constitutional delay. These individuals tend to have a family history of delayed puberty and typically catch up with their peers in their late teens.
    • 2. Chronic illness: Certain chronic conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or kidney disease, can delay puberty due to the impact on overall health and hormone levels.
    • 3. Hormonal disorders: Conditions affecting the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, or other endocrine glands can disrupt the production and release of hormones necessary for puberty. Examples include hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, hypothyroidism, or certain genetic disorders.
    • 4. Malnutrition or eating disorders: Inadequate nutrition or significant weight loss due to conditions like anorexia nervosa or severe malnutrition can delay puberty.
    • 5. Genetic disorders: Certain genetic conditions, such as Turner syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome, can be associated with delayed puberty.
